BATTLE OF THE BANDS RESULTS and WHADDYA KNOW...I'm a 'Cult Classic'

We’re almost a full week into the A to Z Challenge and most of you are really plugging away. I must say there are some awesome themes running on some of my favorite blogs. No, I’m not participating, but I am lurking. AND, speaking of that…this morning I found out that apparently I am a ‘Cult Classic’. Thanks Alex. Something new to add to my monikers. You can check that out HERE.

I thought that maybe during the A to Z Thing BOTB would kind of fall by the wayside for some of you, but not so. The normal BOTB participants have found clever ways to incorporate their BATTLES into their alphabet soup posts and I’ve had a record number of voters here at my site (even though I’m not a participant in the A to Z). Thank you all for coming by and casting a vote during your busy Alphabet frenzy. As the votes were piling up, I was actually hoping for a record 25 votes but I fell short by 1 (I’m looking at you luckymama13 – where are you hiding?). But, 24 is good and you all helped make this an interesting BATTLE.

Before I give you the final tally, let me tell you my vote. I vote for Van the Man Morrison. I have not found a song of his that I don’t like and some I really love. I have to admit, I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is about his style, but he definitely has SOME. In this tune, I will admit he does meander all over the melody (as stated by Sheboygan Boy) but his bluesy, soulful rendering allows for a lot of forgiveness on my part. I get a real feeling of longing and isn’t that what this song is all about.

I did enjoy the Dr. John version, and there’s no arguing that he has some great instrumentation there, but over all I think his version is a little too jazzy, upbeat, and downright happy for the lyrics.

The final tally:

Van Morrison              17 votes (including mine)

                Dr. John                       7 votes

I’ll be back on the 15th with a BATTLE appropriate for the ‘times of the season’. Until then I hope you all soldier on with the A to Z and come back here for a little breather and some well-deserved R & R.

Now get back out there and see how the other BATTLES went, along with your ‘F’ choices of the day.

Happy Trails to you…until the 15th of April.

  1. Listening to a song just takes a moment, so it's easy to do.

    1. And it's a good thing too. I would have been seriously disappointed if he had lost.

  8. Dang! A "Cult Classic". Does this mean you're going to start snubbing the rest of us with the cold shoulder?

Nice turnout for your BOTB. You left me in the dust this time.

With Van, I don't think it's even a criticism to say that he "meanders" all over the melody of a song. That "meandering" bit is actually the heart (or at least a core element) of the "Van Morrison vocal style".

Van just sort of starts out with the structure most of the time as a jumping off point, and then he just lets his mood at the moment take him where it will with the song he's singing.

And, of course, he often tends to repeat a word or lyric line until he feels he's wrung it out and achieved the rhythmic twist he was needing, before he moves on and back into the structure of the song again.

This was a good BOTB installment, FAE.

I'm really curious to see how you're going to vote on my next one, as it's hard for me to predict how most of the regular BOTB voters are going to go on it. I think I know how I'm voting, but I like both recordings so much that even MY vote could change before April 21st.

I'm curious to see how I'm going to vote on your next BOTB also. Actually I'm curious to SEE you next BOTB. ;-)

  9. You and I were of the same mind on this Battle pairing and we were both right.

If you're of cult classic status does that you're going to start a cult now? Please don't serve Kool-aid at your meetings as that can be kind of a turn-off.

  11. Glad to know we both made the right choice. Come to think of it, I haven't heard of a Van the Man song that I didn't like either.
