If you weren't sure, every one of those song titles is a YouTube link to the song itself, just click on it for some pure Tom Petty pleasure. I tried to use ones with printed lyrics, so you could see as well as hear the words. If you don't have time to listen to them all, please at least listen to ... 'What is life to you?' - WILDFLOWERS; my all time favorite Tom Petty song.
I'll be back on the 15th with another BATTLE OF THE BANDS. Until then...Happy Trails!
I think my life would be called You Got Lucky.
ReplyDeleteThat's both funny and nice to hear.
Deletehaha that is a fun meme indeed. Good way to be, not backing down.
ReplyDeleteIt may be a good way to be, but have gotten me into trouble more than once. Still, I wouldn't change a thing.
DeleteFun!

DeleteBish - so much fun you just had to say it twice, right?
StMc - I have a funny story about that, maybe I'll tell you sometime.
Fabulous choice there, FAE! ☺ I love Tom Petty! His catalogue is so extensive, it probably wasn't too difficult finding just the right answers. Your motto is perfect. Thanks so much for participating.
ReplyDeleteHey Debbie the Doglady, thanks for getting us all started on this one. This is the most fun I've had doing a meme, in a long time. Actually, this is the first one I've done in a long time. I usually just can't find the time. Although, this was a tad time consuming (probably because I added a link to each song) it was well worth it. I've really enjoyed reading the others, also. I'll have to check back at your site and see who has been added to the list.
DeleteGreat job, especially the last three. Like Petty is known to have said, "Don't bore us, get to the chorus!" (Don't know where that applies to this post, just always kinda liked it...)
ReplyDeleteI especially liked that reference to 'Mystic Eyes'. Ha, ha, ha! It fit my persona perfectly.
DeleteThis is an awesome post, ha ha. I love things that tell me more about the real blogger behind the post.

ReplyDeleteAnd, another blogger who is so excited about this kind of thing, that they just have to say so twice. Thanks Cherdo.

ReplyDeleteThis was great. Even as a lifetime fan of Tom Petty from (before) the debut album in 1976, you came up with some songs I don't even know.
It's alright if you love me
It's alright if you don't
I'm not afraid of you runnin' away, honey
I've got the feeling you won't
There is no sense in pretending
Your eyes give you away
Something inside of you is feeling like I do
We said all there is to say...
'BREAKDOWN', in 1976, was my introduction to TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS. But I heard him before the rest of the country did, and in a form that the rest of the country never has.
I was living in Los Angeles, and I kept hearing this new band played on the local radio station. It was 'BREAKDOWN' by some group called "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers". It was obviously a "live" recording, and probably recorded in a small studio setting. I thought it was so damned great that I immediately went out and purchased the first album, hot off the presses.
How ironic that my second impression of TP&TH was a bit negative. When I got home in 1976 with that album I was dismayed that 'Breakdown' wasn't the fabulous live recording I'd been hearing on the radio, but a weak (by comparison) studio recording.
Eventually, I got over my initial disappointment and came to love TP&TH. Today, they are one of the few R&R bands I loved in my youth that I still love in my old age. I'm listening to the old bugger right now ('Anthology: Through The Years'), and I don't even know how many times I've watched the 2-DVD documentary 'Runnin' Down A Dream' which my friend The Flyin' Aardvark gave me as a gift some years back.
Strangely, no one I've ever yakked with seems to remember that live recording of 'Breakdown'. I've come to believe that it was an exclusive release solely intended for the L.A. market. And that's really too bad, because it was THE BEST version of 'BREAKDOWN' I ever heard. It did, instantly, turn me into a TP&TH fan, but I do wish I could hear it again. The rest of the world deserves to hear the best version of Tom Petty's first hit song!
Your blog bit was excellent, and I'm really glad you included (at least) one song from my all-time favorite TP&TH album. I mean, of course, 'THE CRIMINAL KIND' from 'HARD PROMISES'. To me, that is the ULTIMATE Tom Petty album, and I could do an entire "Story Of My Life" post on that album alone.
In fact, one of the best things I ever write was based on a song on that same album:
'PAIN MANAGEMENT: Pills, Pillows, And Petty'

Glad you enjoyed this post. I really had a good time putting it together. It was a bit time consuming, adding all the links, but I think it turned out well and I'm glad I did that.
DeleteI remember that post of yours at the old 'Stuffs' blog. It was very good, although somewhat upsetting.
I have a lot of holes in my memory (chemotherapy does that to your brain), so I can't give you the exact year, but I do remember hearing TP on the radio for the first time and thinking; 'WOW, Dylan has put something new out. It's a tiny bit different for him, but great all the same.' Upon a closer listening, I realized it wasn't Dylan, but this guy I had never heard of, Tom Petty. I've often joked to friends - there goes Tom doing...so and so again. I do think he's a musical genius of sorts, and one of my favorites for sure.
I wonder how many other people have a...'first time I heard Tom Petty story to tell. Could be an interesting meme all by itself.
This one sure was fun. I've enjoyed reading all of the posts, even though some of them have some rather lame music attached to great titles, that fit these questions perfectly. There are a few other artists that I could think of doing also, but since Tom sings my life so well, it was only appropriate that I use his tunes.
Excellent choice of artist. Petty has so many great song titles from which to choose and they are great songs as well. I've been a fan of Petty's music since 1980 or so which is when I first recall him coming under my radar.

I just told StMc (above) I don't recall the exact date that I first became familiar with Tom's music, but I do remember that I liked it from the start. This guy sings my life so well, that from the moment I first read one of these posts, I knew I had to try it and I knew I would use the music of TP.
DeleteOf all the ones I've read, this is my favorite! You did a great job. The best of your answers? IMO it was "If you could change your name, you would change it to: Mystic Eyes". HA HA HA!!!
ReplyDeleteI still contend that you're "Far away eyes with the mystery smile," but that's a song lyric, not title. Hmmm... Jackson Browne might make a good one of these lists, too.
I love Tom Petty, and he is one of the few artists that StMcC and I both love.
There are several artists that I think I could use for this meme, and Jackson Browne is a good example. BUT, tom sings my life (really) so well, that I knew I had to use his music.
DeleteI almost used 'Melinda' as the 'what would you change your name to', answer and then I remember Mystic Eyes. I thought that was kind of clever myself and immediately tossed Melinda aside.
Read your 'Who' answers at Little Stevie's blog and thought they were really good also.
These were all good. The one I like best: Love Is A Long Road.
ReplyDeleteAin't that the truth???
That particular son title was a perfect fit, if I do say so myself.
DeleteFae, Tom Petty is a classic retro artist. Good play on this challenge with your song choices. See ya tomorrow for BoTB!
ReplyDeleteHey Cathy, loved your ZZ Top post, a bit surprised that they were the artist you picked, but it was a good post and the songs really fit the questions. This whole thing was a ton of fun, both doing it and reading the other participants answers.
DeleteSee ya tomorrow.
Great musician to utilize. I love so many of Petty's songs. Hmmmm, Mystic Eyes instead of FarAwayEyes.
ReplyDeleteSomething to consider. ;)
Glad you liked it Jeffrey. Yeah, that 'Mystic Eyes' was kind of clever, if I do say so myself. Enjoyed this to pieces.
DeleteThis is so fun!! I am going to do it now.

Hey Shadowfire, thanks for stopping by. Glad you enjoyed this. I had a great time putting it together. Hope you made your way over to Debbie's place, she's the originator, as far as I know. There are several others on the list, that are also great.
DeleteI checked out your site earlier today from my phone. Very interesting stuffs. I'll get back to leave some comments and I'll be watching for your...'My Life According To...' post.
Should you stop back, please try to join me and a few of my friends in our BATTLE OF THE BANDS BLOG HOP. We post on the first and fifteenth of each month. Stop my tomorrow, if you have time, and see what it's all about.
