BATTLE OF THE BANDS XXII

Little Stevie Wonder

VS.

Grupo Rush

Sorry folks, poor health has caught up with me, and my hands and wrists hurt too much to type. You should know what to do and how to do it. If not go to F-FFF and Stephen will tell you what to do. He knows everything.

First off, I want to say that I'm sorry to learn you're not feeling well and I will definitely say a prayer for your return to good health.

In general, I like Stevie Wonder, and some of his songs I absolutely love! I own 2 CDs of his music - 'Innervisions' and 'The Definitive Collection' - which contain most of his best, in my opinion.

I'm crazy about 'Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing' and 'Superstition'. In fact, the 'Innervisions' album is just essential as far as I'm concerned.

I even love a lot of his syrupy love songs like 'My Cherie Amour' and 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life'.

But Stevie could sometimes get pretty "soapy", "sickeningly sweet". I could never listen to 'Overjoyed' and that sugary mess he made with Paul McCartney, 'Ebony And Ivory', without feeling my teeth rotting out.

Unfortunately, another song that falls into that last category for me is 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'. I 'bout fell out of my chair the day my Pa told me he really liked that song a lot. (Just when you think you really know someone...)

I don't think I ever heard of Groupo Rush before, and based on the photos of them, those sure are a couple of... fellas. Those photos looked like they were modeling outfits in a Sears catalog or sumpin'.

However, I'm gonna vote for the... "fellas"... primarily because I did like that percussion work that went on throughout their version of Stevie's Syrup.

Hope you feel much better real soon!

  3. Sorry to hear about your misfortune and hope things improve soon.

At least you still have a sense of humor. That match up was hilarious. Grupo sounds like a couple of wannabes at the karaoke bar at the Mexican restaurant where I live. Nix on those boys.

"Just Called..." is a song my wife loves, but I'm more like STMc about it. I pick Stevie's version cause it's him.

  4. Sorry you're hurting, you are a trooper to not just bag it this trip. Hope it gets better. I too, will go with Stevie. The other one is interesting, but in the end, it's Stevie's tune.

  5. Stevie Wonder for my vote. He's got such a beautiful voice. The other version is nice too, but is just a softer sounding version of Stevie.

Take care of yourself, it's inspiring to see you struggled to put up the BOTBs, that shows dedication to the blog. Hope you are better soon.

    1. PS - Stevie can be overly syrupy, yes, but he does it so well. . . There were times I didn't care for some of his songs, but I've always liked his voice.

  6. Sorry you hurt!
Both versions are good. Not a Stevie Wonder fan, but he's more in the neutral area. I'm going to actually say Grupo Rush. They made the song just a little bit more interesting.

  7. I like Rush's beat, but I'll go with classical Stevie on this one.

  8. Sorry to hear about your pain. They never told us this when we were young...I used to wonder why my mother complained of aches and pains (she was right about as old as I am now), and I wish I could apologize to her for thinking she was "a complainer," because I have inherited those aches and pains and have made all the same noises my parents made (gotta love arthritis in both knees!) for quite a few years.

While I love much of Stevie Wonder's output, I either never liked this one, or got sick of it because it was played to death.

That said, the Grupo Rush electronic drum beat is giving me a migraine as I type this, so I'm voting for Stevie.

Is "My Cherie Amour" a choice?

  9. I am sorry that your aches and pains flared up to the point that it was difficult putting together this post. That sucks and I hope things improve soon.

I actually like this song and like Stevie Wonder's recording of it. I didn't care as much for Grupo Rush - even though they did make their cover different enough that it stood out. The percussion eventually got to me... although it didn't affect my migraine one way or the other... it just became less enjoyable as the song went on. Whereas I really like Stevie Wonder's version... so it the easy winner for me.

  10. I've always loved Stevie, even if as mentioned he can get a bit "syrupy" sometimes. Even so, I still prefer his version to Grupos. That electronic drum thing wore on my nerves pretty quickly.

    Get better soon, alright?

  11. Tough call; the voices are nearly close enough. But, hands down Stevie.

    Feel better soon FAE.

I am voting for Stevie Wonder. The Grupos have no groupies here!
