INSECURE WRITERS SUPPORT GROUP - 2015 - I

Today is the first Wednesday in February! YIKES! Already I’m losing the race of 2015. BUT…it’s also time for another posting of the INSECURE WRITERS SUPPORT GROUP. This is the ‘brain child’ of none other than Mr. Alex J. Cavanaugh, and if you want to know more about it and check out the other participants please go HERE There are normally some pretty good posts and some that are downright inspirational, so, go ahead, finish up here and click on over to see what others have to say.

I’ve set some personal goals with respect to my writing for 2015 and already I’m behind. I just don’t know where January went. Well, actually I do. I had pneumonia one week, and personal meltdown another, and so on, and so on, and so on. I keep promising myself that I’ll be better/stronger/healthier and feeling as though I’m failing miserably. Funny though (not in the ha, ha, sense, but more in the this is really odd sense) I don’t feel too insecure. I have so many ideas running around my brain, I keep thinking that if I can just glue my butt to the chair and make the time for them, I can really get something done.

How ‘bout you? Are you finding/making the time for those things you REALLY want to do? Are you able to get your ideas down on paper or the screen? If you have suggestions (other than Just Do It), please let me know. Some of my ‘characters’ are keep me awake nights, with their pleas to be set free.

  1. Away the ideas flow here, so far able to make time as well. Just have to get that butt in the chair

  2. I wouldn't recommend gluing your butt to the chair. That would be painful when you finally have to get up.
Maybe record those ideas while you're busy doing something else?

    1. Recording the ideas, as in using a small recorder seems to be getting the most votes.

  3. Sickness can be a real tough obstacle to get over. So far this year I've been fortunate to have avoided the bouts of sickness that have set me back in the previous few years. You can't be doing as badly as I am as far as being behind. I'm still catching up from 2012.

  4. Glad you came through the pneumonia. Try thinking of your writing the same way you would think about another job. Set yourself a time to clock in, and show up on time.

    1. Second time in 12 months with pneumonia for me. Guess I'm getting good at it.

You know I've worked from home for so long, that option really doesn't work for me. I know, I know, I need more discipline.

    2. Hey Kathy, one more thing, on the chance you come back for a look see, please let me a link to your blog. I would love to return the visit, but I can only get to google+, which isn't directing me to your blog space. Thanks!

  5. I guess as writers we have to turn those melt downs and set backs into stories or scenes for the next story. That's the only way I see we're going to stay sane or less insane.

    1. Good point. sometimes when I'm editing my work, I worry that there will be a bit too much transparency. YIKES! There I go again telling all my secrets.

  6. Real life does get in the way sometimes. Like being sick. And I just realized today is the first Wednesday. Gah!

    1. It kind of snuck up on me too.

I need to say that I'm generally doing so much better than I was, say, before June 1, 2014. Unfortunately, when my autoimmune disease kicks up a fuss, it can get me down for a few weeks. all the problems in January where just the results of having family here and way too much fun over the Holidays.

  7. Hi FAE. I'm not a writer; my passion is painting, I often carry a small tape recorder so I can get those pesky thoughts out. (I co-ordinate three blogs, and two bloghops, so it really comes in handy to play back the day's insanity.) I often seem to be in the basement on laundry day when the rush of ideas begins. (Aw, don't you just the sound of a washing machine?) The tape recorder is palm size... you can leave it on, in a pocket... just be careful at the grocery store. Other customers might think you've lost it. (smile)

    1. I think, so far, there have been three suggestions about recording thoughts...I'll have to give that one some serious consideration. I often make notes in my phone, when some brilliance strikes, but that is tedious and I don't add much detail, but if I could record it, I'm sure I could paint a more vivid word picture in just a few seconds.

I admit I can't imagine how you keep three blogs and two bloghops going. BOTB and this once a month IWSG is about all I can keep up with.

  8. Well, there goes my advice. Just do it, lol.

Seriously though, sometimes you just have to give yourself permission to "fail" every once in a while. Cry a little and get back to it. I have a lot of projects sitting around waiting for me to Just Write. Of course, I do my best thinking in the shower, or house cleaning.

    1. You and Nike, huh?

You're right about giving myself permission to fail, BUT I really hate that.

I do some of my best thinking in water. when I lived in the islands I would just go to the beach. Here I have to wait for summer. Although I admit to getting some great inspiration in the shower. Everyone seems to suggest carrying a small recording device to record spontaneous thoughts. I wonder if they make those water proof. :-)

  9. If you have a lot of ideas churning around but can't seem to get your butt in the chair, try carrying a little digital recorder with you and dictate those thoughts as you have them. That might start your creative juices flowing and help you get back to a better/more productive place.

    1. I knew there was a third recommendation for this. See some of my comments above. It is a good idea, which I may have to try.

    2. And I obviously didn't read all the previous comments before making mine. Busted. :-)

  10. Sometimes life trips us up, but we need to get right back up and keep pushing on. You can do it. :) Not writing makes me anxious!

  11. I can't remember who said it (Hemingway maybe?) that if you have an idea for a story that is keeping you awake at night, get up! That will result in some of your best writing. That's all I've got. If you try it, let me know how it works out for you.

    1. You know I used to do this. Lately, I'm just too tired. Even when I can't fall back to sleep, I keep hoping and laying there. I know if I get up and put a light on, it's all over and I won't be sleepy again until about 3 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, a nap in not in my future.

I used to keep a notebook by the bed to record some particularly brilliant thought or even a vivid and imaginative dream, I should at least try to get back to that.

  12. Sounds like you're in a good creative frame of mind. Hope your health follows and you are well soon....and some of those characters get their way :)

  13. Illnesses and the like can set anyone back. I hope you're feeling better and can find the energy for creativity.

    1. Energy for creativity - that's a good phrase and something often hard to come by, especially when feeling down.

    1. Well I have to admit, it really wasn't much, but I keep trying to plug along.

  16. Even if it's only one hour I try to force myself to commit to that block of time and spend it ONLY writing. I shut off the Internet, the TV, my phone, anything distracting, and just write. Time management - without it, I'm essentially useless.

    1. You know, that's an idea that I'm going to institute. Start with one hour a day that I don't let anything else interfere with. I know I need more time than that to really be productive, but maybe I can work my way up.
