BATTLE OF THE BANDS - PAVEMENT

Y’all know I’ve moved recently, and if you know that, you probably also know that I move a lot. My furniture which is all old, some actual antiques, some old family pieces and the rest pretty much picked up at thrift stores, and flea markets (I don’t believe in buying brand new furniture, except for mattresses.) has really taken a beating. So, I have been working on refinishing, repurposing, and painting most of it.

Yesterday, I had all the good intentions of writing my BOTB post, scheduling it, and then forgetting about it until this morning when all of your lovely comments started rolling in, but first, I thought, I’ll just put one coat of chalk paint on the interior of this old bookcase that I have been using as a curio cabinet (It’s a great curio cabinet, much better than a bookcase except for the fact that it is so dark inside, so painting it a lighter color on the interior seemed like a good idea.). I mean how long could that take, right?

Well, the paint can says to shake well, so I was shaking this quart can of paint…well, when it slipped out of my hand, hit the tile floor and popped open (brand new can of paint, never before been opened and it just exploded). The ensuing mess was unbelievable, paint everywhere. On me, on the kitchen cabinets, on the tile floor; it was a colossal disaster.

'Oh carp'! I didn’t scream (I used a lot stronger language than that). Then I proceeded to use some very colorful language, as I cleaned up the rainbow of a mess from my kitchen.

Now I bet you’re wondering how this relates to my title PAVEMENT. Well y’all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions, right? Well, my good intention of writing this post yesterday went straight to hell the minute that paint can exploded. So, I’m a little bit late getting this up today, but you’re not surprised, are you?

I’m not a big fan of a lot of ‘newer’ music, and I really don’t like a lot of these ‘boy’ groups that pop up from time to time, but there was one that had a string of hits and then seemed to disappear from my radar. They had a unique sound and I liked it quite a bit. Their hit ‘Secrets’ really caught my attention because of the mournful cello lead in. I find that I like the cello a lot, especially its use in more modern/pop music.

So, today I’m gonna use the original hit versus a cover. Yeah, I know that can be BOTB suicide, but what the hay? It's been that kind of weekend.

Let’s start with the cover, shall we?

Here’s The Piano Guys (The Cello Guy, actually) with their version of ‘Secrets.

Next up the original, by One Republic.

Now leave me a comment containing your vote and your reason why. When you’ve finished up here mosie on over to the home of Mr. BOTB hisself Stephen T. McCarthy and see what he has cooked up for you in his kitchen of creative musicality. After you leave your opinion there, check out the list of other participants and please, try to vote at each site.

I’ll be back on the 21st with my vote, and the final tally.

Until then try not to pave anything, and may you enjoy HAPPY TRAILS.

  1. I think One Republic is what they also call an emo band.
I'm going to start this out on a unique note and say the cover is better. As a musician, I appreciate the orchestra.
Really sorry about the can of paint. One day, you'll look back and laugh. Not for a while, but one day...

    1. I'm gonna have to take your word on that emo band thing. I'm just not up on all that kind of stuff. Is that emo like in emotional?

I admit your vote kind of surprised me, but I'll take it. It's good to be surprised sometime.

I'm already laughing about the paint, but at the moment, not so much.

  3. I agree with John and my vote goes to the Cello guy. There is something about an orchestra that twigs the strings of my heart. The original is okay, but doesn't have the effect of the music of a symphony. . .

  5. That is horrible what happened with the paint! I can't even imagine the string of cuss words I would've been screaming had that happened to me. I hope you got all the mess cleaned up and that the paint didn't ruin anything in your kitchen. You have to admit, it's kinda funny -- now. I'm sure it wasn't at all funny yesterday. I had one of those interactions with paint that is funny as hell now but then I was so angry. I was painting at my bar (walls and ceiling) and came down off the ladder only to slip and fall in wet paint that had ended up on the floor somehow. So I have paint all up the side of me. That's not so bad, right, after all, I have my painting clothes on. But then I decided to move the ladder with the gallon of paint on the ladder tray and when I moved it, the gallon fell over and the paint washed over me...and soaked me...to the point that when I got home and took off my clothes, my tits were green! My partners walked into the bar (of course I was alone when that happened) they couldn't stop laughing at the sight of me. What a mess. Oh the tales paint could tell! Hope you're having a better day today.

As for your battle, I like the original. I like the orchestra version but I like the lyrics with the song better so my vote goes to New Republic. Really nice song and nice music for a Sunday...

    1. Michelle, in The BATTLE OF THE PAINT STORIES, YOU WIN! That is hilarious! I can just imagine the look on your face when that paint came down off the4 ladder and washed over you. I think I would have been in shock. I hope you weren't hurt.

I can laugh about my painting fiasco now, but at the time, I was fuming. Fortunately, it was chalk paint and I was surprised how easily it cleaned up. Also, fortunately, I had just cut up 3 or 4 old sheets to use as rags. I filled two grocery sacks with the messy rags and just threw them away. It's over now and the curios/bookcase looks great. Hope you were able to say the same about the bar.

Finally, One Republic gets a vote. It was looking like another blow out in the making. I fear I'm losing my touch in presenting good BATTLES.

  6. I don't envy your situation though I've been assembling a lot of stuff lately that my wife has wanted us to have. I've never been much good at refinishing, restoring, and such, but I've never tried much of it either. Hope all goes better with the rest of your project. Someday I want to move from where we are, but I'd prefer someone to do all the work for me. Come to think of it by the time our moving comes I might be so old and feeble I'll have to have help.

I like both versions of this song, but I will go with the orchestral remake. It's expansive and beautiful.

A vote for the Guys no matter what instrument they're playing.

    1. I'm on a big kick to get rid of all the excess. This move really did me in. I was pretty organized, but overwhelmed at all the stuff that has accumulated. I'm going through a box a day and either putting the stuff into use, throwing it out, or putting it on the 'garage sale' pile. I hope to have a sale in a few weeks and what doesn't move will go to the thrift store. I really don't want my kids to have to sort through all of my junk when I die. YIKES!

  7. Ooo, sorry about the paint can explosion! That's a real bummer. I like some of One Republics songs, but I knew before I listened to either videos which I would go with and after hearing both I stand by prediction. I'm giving my vote to The Piano Guys. Generally, they can take any music arrangement and make it awesome! It's amazing what beautiful music those guys reproduce. Thanks for sharing. Have a bandtastic week, my friend!

  9. I love One Republic. Just LOVE them. I dedicated a song to StMc a while back when I was still doing HERE'S TO YOU (so it's been a while)...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrOeGCJdZe4

And I have this one as my general ringtone on my phone. I particularly like the lyric: "I see this life like a swinging vine, Swing my heart across the line, In my face there's flashing signs, Seek it out and ye shall find, I'm old but I'm not that old, Young, but I"m not that bold, And I don't think the world is sold, Just doin' what we're told." What I love is the ENTIRE song is a mess of contradictions. Like I don't think the world is sold (we're just doin' what we're told). Ha!

Oh, I love The Piano Guys, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE One Republic. So, One Republic for me.

    1. That's one of my favorite songs, too, Robin!!

    2. Gotta say I don't remember that dedication, but then there were to many, especially to STMC. For awhile I told him you should have changed the name of that meme to 'Here's to You STMC'. OK, I'm just giving you shit. I hope that wasn't out of line.

I like the song 'All the Right Moves' also. But I'm confused because those lyrics are the ones to 'Counting Stars' (I see that you have included the link to that below). I also like 'Counting Stars'...everything that kills me, makes me feel alive. Yeah, I relate to that. Ya know, when I think about it 'Counting Stars' sounds like a Train song, so it stands to reason you would like it/them.

So it's one love for The Piano guys and 3love for One Republic. sounds like a tennis match, Ha!

      Another one for One Republic.

    1. Thanks for the tip on cleaning up the paint. This was chalk paint and I was pleasantly surprised at how easily it came off of everything. Big mess, yes, but the clean up wasn't near as bad as some of the more minor spills I've had with latex.

A vote for rich orchestration. You got it.

  13. That's truly awful what happened with the paint and just know that we're both laughing WITH you, not AT you. And isn't that how it always happens? Something slips out of your hand, and it doesn't just land on the floor with a slight thud. No, it always has to explode in complete and utter catastrophe, as if you just hurled it to the ground with all of your might.

As for the battle, neither of us are fans of One Republic, nor are we of this song, until we heard the Cello Guy. Great version. So hauntingly beautiful. We both vote emphatically for him.

    1. OK guys, two emphatic votes for the Cell Guy. Now, why am I not surprised that youse guys are not big fans of One Republic.

That paint thing is funny today, but if anyone had been here and laughing at me or with me, I just might have had to try and punch their lights out. I was so completely frustrated at the moment. You are 100% right about the 'slipping out of your hands and just hitting the floor with a thud' thing; THAT is never my lot in life. Now, if I were trying to explode a paint can all over something, I probably couldn't throw it with enough force in a million years.

      Delete
  14. When I read your tale about the paint, I actually shouted, "Oh, yikes!" as if I could grab the can before it hit the floor. I'll bet you were absolutely fired up; I know I would be. Sorry that happened, m'dear. If I were there, I'd grab the paper towels and mineral spirits and dive in.

Well, I just commented that I loved a song Robin mentioned (Counting Stars by One Republic). Love that group so much. However, that cello just knocks it out of the park and I do have a thing for all strings (Gonzo has taken 10 years of violin!).

A decision has to be made...uh...uh...THE CELLO GUY.

Whew...that was painful; I was so torn. Don't tell the One Republic guys, okay?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I promise to never mention your vote to One Republic. Ten years of violin, I'll bet he's pretty good, eh? I too love strings, but the deep rich tones of the cello really get to me.

Why is it that something never happens when there are helping hands around. I think the most frustrating part is having to clean the mess up all by yourself, especially when your a big part of the mess.

  15. What an awful mishap! :( I can just imagine the colourful words. Hope you were able to get it cleaned up without ruining anything.

I'm not that thrilled with new music either and also not much into boy bands, but One Republic didn't sound bad. Still, I preferred the Cello Guy (Piano Guys).

    1. Of the newer stuff out there One Republic has a nice sound that doesn't seem just like everyone else. But that Cello Guy is certainly unique.

Fortunately, the paint came up very well and nothing was ruined. If that had happened I don't think I could have joked, or even written about it.

  16. Not suicide this time, FAE!!

Really sorry about the paint mishap!

I like One Republic pretty well, and I liked the Piano, lute, and lyre guys too.

This is a close battle for me, but also an easy one: One Republic wins. It is a catchy, pleasant, pop-y song. The hit is better. As an aside: they are from the general Denver area, and I've met the drummer when my son participated in a "drum off."

    1. I had no idea One Republic was from CO. I do like most of their stuff (at least what I've heard). I suppose for some the lyrics do add something. I really like the added Beethoven in the Piano Guys version, but then that might be considered cheating.

A 'drum off', now that sounds interesting.

  17. I am paving a path of tiredness right now. But, when this rock does not roll on, I get bored. Hate being bored.

Wierdly enough, I like to clean house to classical music. Specifically The William Tell Overture. I am hoping I have moved for the last time in my life, but who knows. I hope you are happy now, with all of your things in one place :)

This is a great battle. I loved the first one, the cello boys. Just too awesome. I've listened to One Republic before, and love them also. This was a very good song for them.

Almost to difficult to choose. The song itself lends itself to variation. I'm going with the "piano" guys for this battle. Orchestra music with no singing is so awesome.

I hope you are all unpacked - or at least comfortably unpacked. So hard to get used to a new place, to settle in. I've been here two years and still feel like I need to find where everything goes.

Hope all goes well with all your new adventures FAE.

  20. Oh my...the paint story sounds like hell. I hope you were able to clean up the area well enough and still have enough for what you wanted to do with it. It's horrible but...I did giggle...just a little because it's something one hears in a comedy...sorry, I know it wasn't funny at the time or maybe even now. Anyhow, I had to go to YouTube to listen to the piano guys as it wouldn't play here and I'm glad I could because they get my vote. I believe I heard this song sung by an operatic singer named Kathleen from Wales. Anyhow I found it much more enthralling listening to the more classical style than the original. Since I love classical I am not surprised at myself

    1. The paint cleaned up nicely, so alls well thends...It is funny today, at the time, not so much. For a minute or two I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough paint left, so I actually scraped some up off the floor into a plastic container. Being that it was chalk paint and it goes pretty far, I was OK, but then it's expensive and I hate wasting.

The mixiof Beethoven in with the pop tune really works well for the Piano Guys, and for those of us who love classical music.

  23. FAE ~
Prior to your invention of BATTLE OF THE BANDS, I'd never heard of The Piano Guys. But they've been used quite a number of times during the 2+ years of BOTB and I really like 'em. In fact, I think I've voted for them every single time they've appeared in a BOTB installment, and it's always been a slam-dunk vote, too.

    Until today.

I had to listen to both recordings twice in order to decide. And in the end, I find I'm voting for ONE REPUBLIC.

    Why?
How the hell should I know?

    No.
    Seriously.
    Why?

To my ears, this really isn't a strong melody. I picked up more of it the second time through and would probably find it fully after awhile. But I think the melody being rather subtle kind of needs the vocals to punch it up.

Also, I did like the vocals and the passion in ONE REPUBLIC's sound, so after my second take of each, my vote became quite clear.

Can't believe I've finally voted against The Piano Guys, but it IS BOTB where we should 'spect the un'spected.
