‘WHAT ARE WORDS?’
B is for BELLIGERENT {inclined or eager to fight, hostile or aggressive}
I used to be BELLIGERENT all of the time. It was very unbecoming, especially for a lady. It was difficult. I was raised to be a lady, by parents who came from two generations before me, and from a more gentle time. At the same time, my father was a hard man and he raised me to take care of myself. Living a contradiction isn’t easy.
My BELLIGERENCE usually took a verbal form, but I have to admit I have an incredible BELLIGERENT ‘look’. Life has taught me, it’s so much easier to have a pleasant ATTITUDE. I’ve learned to stop looking for the fight. I’ll still fight for what I believe in, but most of my beliefs are too sacred, to fight about. Look at the glass half full instead of half empty. Life isn’t such a contradiction anymore. What is, is. Me, I’m better.

Sometimes belligerence can be fun, and you're right, it's all about the attitude. Though looking for fights is kinda fun sometimes too...
ReplyDeleteSome would use a different "B" word to describe me!
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Heather
Belligerent is an excellent word. One of my favorites. I can relate; I was incredibly argumentative in my youth. Funny how age tends to mellow us.
ReplyDeleteBelligerence is, on occasion, my favorite attitude. Awesome post and challenge theme!
ReplyDeleteHappy A-Z blogging!
I've always loved the word belligerent. Probably because it describes me so well. But, like Heather, I'm sure some people would use another B word to describe me too. =)
ReplyDeleteI was like that when I was little. It's why failed the second grade. Hated my teacher and refused to do anything she wanted. My mother was sure I'd end up in the gas chamber by the time I was sixteen. *grins evilly*
ReplyDeleteFunny though. I developed a conscience when I was about 8 (anything significant in that date?). By the time I was sixteen I was a straight arrow.
Belligerent is a great word, even if it's not a great thing to be.
ReplyDeleteBelligerent, good word. Was there one thing that changed your attitude?
ReplyDeletea bit of attitude is good for a'lady' I always think - happy blogging:)
ReplyDeleteAttitude and Belligerent great start to the A - Z challenge .. and as you say a pleasant attitude with a smile is much much better and life is always half full ..
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary

so true!!
ReplyDeleteSo, what took your belligerence down a few ka-notches? Was there a specific event or was it something you just realized after some time?
ReplyDeleteDon't think I was ever belligerent, but there may have been moments of being obnoxious when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteI love to say belligerent. I'm probably guilty of being that sometimes too.
ReplyDeleteTeresa
LOL on your posting and reminds me you know belligerance is normally my defense mechanism and doesn't roar out until I am pushed thats also usually when I say things I regret later. :/
ReplyDeleteFunny, you don't strike me as a belligerent person. Now take my mother ... please!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to mellow with age. :-) I know I have!
ReplyDeleteI want my daughter to be respectful and she usually is. Still, it warms my heart when I see her stick up for herself - especially with a boy, even me. Goodness knows, I deserve it sometimes.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the rest of the challenge!
I am very sure that sometimes I can be belligerent. :)
ReplyDeleteLove looking at words and the depth of meaning they can offer!

Oh belligerence...how I so can do without you in my life...
ReplyDeleteHowever, that being said...I heart farawayeyes :)
There is a time to be belligerent...and when that time comes I want someone like that on my team! :)
ReplyDeleteYou looking for a fight? Just kidding!
ReplyDeleteGreat B word to go with your A word! :)
ReplyDeletePeople with chips on their shoulders, and those who feel the world owes them something, take belligerence to a refined height. Best to keep away from them!

Sometimes Belligerence comes in handy!
ReplyDeleteLove the beach photo. Did you take it? Where is it?
Great blog! I agree, cool and friendly is better in the long run but belligerence shows a spark of spirit - we just don't know how to channel it when we're young! Great post. Now following. LindaK
ReplyDeleteBelligerent is a great word. I once accused someone who was drunk of being belligerent. He was highly offended. But he agreed when he was sober.
ReplyDeleteHello! It is nice to "meet" after seeing on George's blog. What a great guy he is.
ReplyDeleteI hated being told not to get mad or fight back when I was kid. My grandmother used to tell me that young ladies do not "engage in fisticuffs" or "insult others in return." We "turn the other cheek."
Made me crazy. :)
Hi,
ReplyDeleteYes, I have had my belligerent stages, but like you, learned that it gains no inner peace. I believe in the saying "Girls just wanna have fun". I laugh a lot, and just generally have a great time.
Best wishes to you.
