Measuring Goodness

We can’t measure our goodness by what we don’t do; by
what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude.
We should measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create,
and who we include.
Pere Henri…CHOCOLAT

As I find myself struggling with various ideologies, looking for answers and trying to find the truth; as often as not, those truths are spoken by a fictional character in a book, play or movie.

Resistance, denial, and exclusion certainly don’t seem the way to a happy life. I do believe that man is that he might find and have joy and yet the world would have us believe differently. I found this the other day, can’t say that I disagree:
Currently I'm guilty of two and seriously guilty of a third. Probably not what you're thinking. I admit to having a problem with RAMBLING CONVERSATIONS. I love em. I love it when someone is willing to talk to me about anything and everything. Honestly, I'm good a rambling.

  1. I'm all for the first one! Midnight swims though? That's way past my bedtime.
I guess what you described is the difference between positive and negative.

  2. Sometimes we do fight against the tide of goodness, don't we? Even though we want to be good. Now, for me I'm in favor of all those except midnight swims - I'm scared I won't see the jellyfish! See? Rambling? I'm good at that.

  3. Totally agree - - man (and woman) is that he might have joy :)

  4. Life's too short to live by too many rules or someone else's idea of 'goodness'. If it makes you happy, and doesn't hurt anyone else, then go for your life!

  5. I love that quote. I agree with everything that you've said here. I've never taken a midnight swim (maybe I should)? I'm a little afraid of the water outside of a swimming pool. I don't like dark mysterious water, and I would never swim in the ocean. I'm terrified a shark would eat me. I know that sounds silly, but Jaws traumatized me as a child.

  7. Some of the most eloquent philosophies I know were spoken by fictional people.

  9. I find the older I get, the more I'm willing to try. Thank God my past (and present) includes deep kisses. And rambling?

  10. I totally agree-- the choices you make will make you happy (or not), and it's up to you to make the ones that are going to cause you to live life the best!

  11. Same here. I'm constantly trying to learn from my life.

I also love rambling conversations. ^_^

  12. I'll take all of those except the midnight swims. See, I can't swim, so that would be more along the lines of 'midnight drowns.'

  13. Wrestling with ideologies and finding the truth. Yes; life is so like that.

BTW, I've purloined a copy of that saying; I know someone for whom it would be ideal. Thank you.

Keep being guilty. None of those things is inherently dangerous. All are potentially great fun.

  14. Don't understand why you're feeling guilty. Stream of consciousness is a good thing. Asian philosophers believe bad is necessary because good couldn't exist without it.

  15. I'm one giant run-on ramble. Not up for any midnight swims though. I like to see what I'm swimming with.

*Love, love, love the Pere Henri quote from Chocolat.
